How To Keep Your Gums Healthy At Home

There is various research and studies that show oral hygiene is important for maintaining overall good health. Despite being aware of this fact, many people tend to ignore their oral health.

When you think about oral health, you may think about straight, aligned, and whitened teeth. But, gums are equally important. Poor gum health and gum diseases can lead to tooth loss. Thankfully, Bismarck, ND dentists, can suggest preventive measures and reverse gum diseases.

Tips for keeping your gums healthy:

    • Use an electric toothbrush.

Although an electric toothbrush is priced more than a manual toothbrush, the extra price is worth it. Electric toothbrushes can clean plaque from teeth and gums much more effectively, according to new studies. Research shows that people who use electric brushes have healthier teeth and gums than people who use regular ones.

    • Use proper brushing methods.

Brush your teeth properly. We cannot emphasize this enough. Brushing properly is key to healthy teeth and gums. The American Dental Association has given the following guidelines for brushing.

    • Brush at least twice a day.
    • Use a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste.
    • Replace your toothbrush after every four months.
    • Move the toothbrush in short strokes.
    • Clean the insides of your front teeth.
    • Floss.

You should floss at least once or twice a day. Floss helps remove plaque and food particles that are beyond your toothbrush’s reach. There is no ideal time to floss. You can floss in the morning, noon, evening, or night.

    • Brush after every meal.

You should brush after every meal and snack or as frequently as possible. It is the best way to prevent tooth decay and gum diseases. By brushing after every meal, you can immediately remove food particles from your mouth, preventing the formation of bacteria.

    • Chooe the right toothpaste.

When choosing toothpaste, you must pay close attention to the ingredients and formula used. There are varieties of toothpaste available in stores, from whitening baking soda to whitening products. When you go to buy toothpaste, make sure to check if it contains fluoride and has an ADA seal on its packaging.

    • Get regular dental cleanings.

Along with taking care of your oral hygiene at home, you should also regularly go for dental check-ups and cleanings. Your dentist can detect teeth problems and gum diseases when they are in their early stages and prevent them from getting severe or worse. A professional cleaning at your dentist’s office includes removing tartar, which you cannot remove at home. It can also remove plaque that you may have missed while brushing or flossing.
